Most people who live or own a business on the water, sooner or later, require the services of a marine contractor, either to construct or repair a dock, boatlift, boathouse, ramp,or shoreline erosion control structure. Carefull selection of a knowledgeable and rebutable marine contractor to perform the work will often determine the quality and sucess of the project. Its critically important to choose an experienced contractor with expertise in the type of project that is proposed, and even more important that he is insured to do the job.
Help Protect Your Investment! If you hire an unisured contractor you open yourself up to liability for any injury on the job site. You could lose your home, your savings, everything. Ask to see a certificate of liability insurance and workers compensation coverage. This is to guard against damage to the homeowner/neighbor's property, or if the contractors injures someone.
Some questions you may want to ask before you build:
How long has the contractor been in business?
Can they provide references from satified customers for projects like yours?
Are they insured? Ask to see the valid certificates and keep them honest.
Are there any court judgements, liens, or active complaints against the contractor?
Check with the Better Business Buerau for any complaints against the contractor.
